Wallace encountered a myriad of fauna that most of Victorian society had never seen. A few are highlighted here.
Simonjan, Sarawak, Malaysia
He was able to examine a frog, later named as Wallace's Flying Frog.
Ambon Island, Indonesia
From visits to this region, Wallace added the racquet-tailed kingfisher and long-armed chafer beetle to his collection.
Bacan Islands, Indonesia
Wallace's enthusiasm is apparent when he recorded the excitement of discovering a new species of butterfly, eventually named Wallace's Golden Birdwing.
Here, Wallace was able to achieve his goal of collecting specimens of the King Bird-of-Paradise. He also added cockatoos to his collection, including the Black Palm Cockatoo.
